John Francis "Jack" Green was born in Aberdeen, South Dakota to Leo A. Green and Pearl (Williams) Green on September 2, 1929. He passed away on Wednesday, April 1, 2015 at Orchards of Northcrest in Napoleon. Jack graduated from Central High School in Aberdeen in 1947. He went on to graduate from the University of South Dakota and then the University of Indiana. In 1959, he married Hilda P. John Francis "Jack" Green was born in Aberdeen, South Dakota to Leo A. Green and Pearl (Williams) Green on September 2, 1929. He passed away on Wednesday, April 1, 2015 at Orchards of Northcrest in Napoleon. Jack graduated from Central High School in Aberdeen in 1947. He went on to graduate from the University of South Dakota and then the University of Indiana. In 1959, he married Hilda P. Wachtman of Napoleon, Ohio, and they went on to have five children, Beth, John, David, Ellen, and Peter. Jack served in the U. S. Army during the Korean War. He left the service as a Captain. He was a longtime member of the First Presbyterian Church in Napoleon, where he served as an Elder, Deacon, and on several other committees. He also taught the high school youth Sunday school class in the early 60's. Jack belonged to the Bert G. Taylor American Legion Post, the Rotary Club of Napoleon, the Elks Club, the Toastmasters, the Gideons, the Masons, and the P.O.E.T.S. Club.
Jack was passionate about politics. He ran for several public offices in the state of Ohio. He fancied himself a U. S. Constitutional scholar. Jack was also passionate about bicycle riding. He completed 32 TOSRV rides (Tour of the Scioto River Valley) over the years, four of which he completed alongside his sons, John and Peter. He also rode his bike from Napoleon, Ohio to the Mackinac Bridge in Michigan and back to Napoleon with his sons, John and Peter, completing the 3000+ mile journey in under 10 days. Jack also loved running. He competed in, and successfully completed, several road races, including 10+ marathons. Jack was an avid reader and supported the Napoleon Public Library.
He leaves to mourn his beloved wife of 56 years, Hilda, and three children; Beth Middleton of Oceanside, CA, Ellen (Brian) Twohig of Chicago, IL, and Peter (Nicole) Green of Encinitas, CA. he was preceded in death by his sons, David and John. Jack was the proud grandfather of 8 grandchildren; Ben, Brad (deceased), Brooke, and Bailey Middleton; Sam and Joe Twohig; and Sofia and Jackson Green.
Visitation will be held from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. on Wednesday, April 8, 2015 at First Presbyterian Church in Napoleon. A Memorial Service will follow at 11 a.m., Pastor Tom Polker officiating. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that you give a donation to the First Presbyterian Church, the Napoleon Public Library, or Hospice of Henry County.
